FutureMail: U.S. is #1 in Many Areas But Not In Health

Although America may lead the world in many categories dealing with commerce, as this Parade.com article clearly demonstrates, the state of health care certainly isn't one of them.

More money is spent per citizen on health care annually ($5,700) than anywhere else but, unfortunately, more than 15 percent of America's gross domestic product is tied up in it.

Grape Seed Extract May Protect Against Skin Cancer

The news just keeps getting better about the natural power of grape seed extract, as research on mice showed how it may protect patients from skin cancer by boosting their immune systems.

Scientists learned about the protective effects of grape seed extract after comparing the health of mice being exposed to ultraviolet light while being fed diets that included or excluded proanthocyanidins (where the antioxidant capacity of grape seed resides).

Healthy Chocolate Is Unsweetened Cocoa
# Cocoa is a rich source of the same type of antioxidants found in red wine - polyphenols. Cocoa powder has nearly twice the antioxidants of red wine and up to three times the antioxidants of green tea. # The flavonoids in cocoa are also good for your heart. They reduce the stickiness of cells that have an important role in blood clotting - platelets. # In Harvard trials, it was found that flavonoids in cocoa help the body to produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a compound essential for proper heart function.

Some cocoa may improve brain blood flow
Ian MacDonald of England's University of Nottingham reported on tests given to young women who were asked to do a complex task while their brains were being studied with magnetic resonance imaging. Among the women given drinks of cocoa high in flavanols, there was a significant increase in blood flow to the brain compared with subjects who did not drink the cocoa, he said.

Who Else Wants Healthy Cholesterol Levels?
Genetics do show that a propensity for cholesterol concerns may indeed run in the family in more recent generations. But the real problem may actually be that poor eating and lifestyle habits tend to run in families. When a person with the genetic propensity for heart disease and cholesterol concerns makes changes to their dietary and lifestyle patterns, their health follows suit.

Since losing a series of court battles with Monsanto, Schmeiser has been travelling the world on a crusade against genetically modified (GM) crops and patenting seeds, speaking to environment groups and public gatherings. Success and Wellness e-Books
I did some research and found many other great books, also public domain, which talk about The Secret and its philosophies, or are inspired by Wattles’ book. The first one I found was “Think and Grow Rich!” by Napoleon Hill, a contemporary of Wattles.

Stop Brain Fog Foods
The Number One natural brain-boosting favorite heath food I've used myself and heard about over the years is organic baby spinach. This probably sounds nuts if you've never tried it, but munching a handful or two of raw baby spinach will give you a mental and physical lift like you wouldn't believe.Resonate with Life : main blog

Fertility treatment raises defect risk
Babies conceived through fertility treatments have higher rates of birth defects, but the overall risk is so small that it should not keep couples from having children this way, doctors are reporting. The news comes from a study of more than 61,000 births in Canada, the largest ever done on this in North America.

Stress busters that really work
Instead of stuffing yourself with that loaf of bread, take a hot bath or shower to relax your muscles and mind. Or lie down and breathe quietly. If you do decide to eat, make that decision consciously. Ask yourself: What are the consequences? The benefits? After answering these questions, "eight out of 10 times you'll skip the Oreos," says University of Alabama psychology professor Beverly Thorn, Ph.D.

CDC Finally Admits Autism is a Greater Danger to Your Children
Tracking the incidence of autism among 8-year-olds, the average rate among sites in 14 states alone was about 1 out of every 150 children (those numbers could be worse due to education records not being available in four states). New Jersey leads the pack with an average of more than 10 children out of 1,000 with autism, while Georgia, Utah, Missouri and West Virginia all averaged more than 7.

Sleep pillow plus exercise best for neck pain
"Our results indicate that subjects with chronic neck pain should be treated by health professionals trained to teach both exercises and the appropriate use of a neck support pillow during sleep; either strategy alone will not give the desired clinical benefit," Dr. Hugh A. Aiming for Ultra-Thin?
Q: My daughter is only 10, and she's already worrying about her weight. She's not overweight, and no one in the family is too heavy. I'm worried that she'll get into unhealthy eating habits. Any thoughts on how to prevent this?

Anaesthetic linked to Alzheimer's
The team from the Massachusetts General Hospital carried out tests on brain cells. They found isoflurane boosts the activity of an enzyme called capase, which plays a major part in causing cells to die - a process called apoptosis - and in the development of amyloid protein. Dr Zhongcong Xie, of the Massachusetts General Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease who led the research, said: "Our studies have shown that isoflurane may induce a vicious cycle of apoptosis, amyloid-beta generation, and further rounds of apoptosis. "If future studies support these findings, they suggest that caution be used in choosing this anaesthetic for elderly patients, who already are at increased risk for Alzheimer's and for postoperative cognitive dysfunction."

Opponents Rally Against Mandatory HPV Vaccine
The good news is that a group of politicians and consumer groups have spoken up against the mandate, calling it a violation of parents' rights with the potential to promote promiscuity. In case you aren't familiar with HPV, it's a sexually transmitted disease that's virtually 100 percent avoidable without a vaccine. Plus, most cases of the infection clear up on their own.

Bans on UK poultry amid flu cull - CNN.com
The European Union's top health official said he was optimistic the bloc would be able to control bird flu this year despite outbreaks of the H5N1 strain in Britain and Hungary.
But EU Health and Food Safety Commissioner Markos Kyprianou added: "The virus is still around. We should never feel that we are safe."
The H5N1 virus has spread into the Middle East, Africa and Europe since it reemerged in Asia in 2003 and outbreaks have now been detected in birds in around 50 countries.
It remains largely an animal disease, but can kill people who come into close contact with infected birds. It has killed 165 people over the past four years, a 22-year-old woman in Nigeria being the latest confirmed victim
